How interview waves work

Interview invitations are not sent in one batch. Schools release them in waves across the cycle, so the date you hear back depends as much on when your application was processed as on how strong it is.

  • Most invitations go out in waves from November to January, with interviews held between late November and March.
  • A quiet December does not mean a rejection. Later waves are normal, and some schools (Southampton, King's, Brunel) run well into the new year or beyond.
  • When an invitation arrives you usually have to respond fast, often within two weeks, or the place is released.
  • A handful of schools interview early: St George's from November, Oxford and Aberdeen in mid-December.

What changes year to year

The biggest change year to year is delivery mode. Many schools moved online during the pandemic; some have stayed online (Bristol, Glasgow, Keele, Nottingham, Plymouth, Aston), while others returned in person (Aberdeen, Leeds, Anglia Ruskin, St George's). Exact calendar dates move by a few weeks each cycle, but the month-level windows below have stayed stable.

Cross-checked for 2026 entry. Windows are month-level and describe the most recent (2026-entry) cycle. Exact dates shift by a few weeks each year and are confirmed only in a candidate's official invitation email. Always treat the invitation as the source of truth. What applicants actually say about the Newcastle University interview

Gathered from applicant forums, weighted by how many independent sources agree. These are unverified community reports, not official university information, and can shift between cycles.

8 insights · 3 widely reported

Expect interview invites in ranked batches from late November, with the highest combined academic plus UCAT scorers emailed first, so a quiet inbox in the first wave does not mean rejection.

Widely reported · 3 sources(spans several cycles)

"DD just got an interview for Newcastle! 11 December though so quite soon... her Ncl score was 78/100 (non contextual), so good but nothing like the high ucat scorers who were contacted first."

Do not write Newcastle off on a middling score: in the 2026 cycle applicants crowd-reported interview invites at combined scores of 78 and even 74 out of 100 non-contextual, and a 2300 UCAT with Band 2 still got an invite.

"My DD's friend NCL score is 74 I believe, so there is hope for them."

Brace for a long silence after interview: applicants track that Newcastle holds all decisions until every interview is done, so a December interview routinely means no news until March, with one 2025-entry timeline showing a 22 November invite and a 20 March offer.

"Paraphrase: one applicant's Newcastle A100 timeline was acknowledgement 7/10/24, interview invite 22/11/24, offer on 20/03."

Be ready to book and travel at short notice: parents report the invite email lands around 20-21 November with a booking deadline, for interview dates as little as two to three weeks later in early December.

If someone comes with you, they can wait inside: there is a lively cafe just inside the medical school where parents sit out the MMI, and families report happily wandering the campus during the wait.

Keep Newcastle on your radar even after a rejection: parents and applicants note it has recruited heavily through clearing in the last two cycles, with a dedicated clearing thread each summer.

Several reports · 2 sources(spans several cycles)

"Newcastle has recruited a lot via clearing the last two years so it will be interesting to see if they make any changes this year."

For an overnight stay, one parent recommends the Maldron Hotel: close to the medical school, family rooms around 69 pounds a night in December, no on-site parking but a discounted rate at the Q Park nearby for hotel guests.

Single report(older cycle)

"The Maldron Hotel in Newcastle is very good, reasonable, close to the Med School and you can get a family room with double and single bed if you are both going. No on-site parking but there is a Q Park nearby and you get reduced rate as hotel resident...you can get a large room excluding breakfast for £69/night in December and £89 with breakfast included."

Treat any single results-day email from Newcastle with caution and check UCAS before reacting: one applicant reported an offer at 3pm, a rejection email ten minutes later, then confirmation of their offer holder event place five minutes after that, with the rejection apparently sent in error.

Single report(2025 entry)

"Paraphrase: the applicant received an offer at 3pm, a rejection email 10 minutes later, then confirmation of a spot at the offer holder event 5 minutes after that, posting in frustration, so which one is it, offer or rejection? Later communications confirmed the offer was valid."
